### The Classic John Cena WWE Prank Call: A Masterclass in Comedy Escalation
▶

In this viral audio clip, a radio host hilariously—and ruthlessly—prank calls an unsuspecting woman who has absolutely zero interest in professional wrestling.

The Premise

The caller repeatedly dials the woman’s home, aggressively using an explosive, high-energy announcer voice (complete with loud theme music and sirens) to pitch a WWE “Super Slam” pay-per-view event featuring John Cena. Despite her polite initial refusal—stating there is “no chance in hell” wrestling will be played in her house—the caller refuses to let up.

The Escalation

With every hang-up, the radio host dials back with a new tactic to break her patience:

  • The “Discount”: Calling back immediately to pitch a ridiculous “shoots and ladders match” while lowering the price of the pay-per-view.
  • “Who is Champ?”: Tricking her into asking who is on the phone, only to scream, “THAT QUESTION WILL BE ANSWERED THIS SUNDAY NIGHT!”
  • The Breaking Point: Blasting more sirens and absurd match descriptions until she finally loses her temper, curses, and demands they stop calling her house.

The Perfect Climax

For the final call, the host changes his tone completely. He adopts a calm, professional voice to ask if she is a supporter of the United States Military and the Marine Corps. Relieved to hear a normal voice, the woman apologizes for her previous outbursts and enthusiastically says she absolutely supports the military.

The host then delivers the ultimate bait-and-switch punchline: “Because a former decorated member of the United States Marine Corps needs your support… AND HIS NAME IS JOHN CENA!”

Jim Simons on Math, Money, and a Meaningful Life - Mathematics, Common Sense, and Good Luck: My Life and Careers

In this talk at MIT, legendary mathematician and billionaire hedge fund manager James Simons reflects on his unique journey across three distinct careers: academia, finance, and philanthropy. Introduced by his former mentor and collaborator, Isadore Singer, Simons shares the principles that guided him from theoretical mathematics to founding Renaissance Technologies, one of the most successful hedge funds in history.

A Life in Three Acts

  • Act I: Mathematics. Simons started his career deeply rooted in mathematics. After studying at MIT and Berkeley, he went on to do groundbreaking work in geometry, particularly the Chern-Simons theory, which later proved foundational in topological quantum field theory and theoretical physics.
  • Act II: Business and Quantitative Finance. At age 38, feeling stuck on a math problem and looking for a change, Simons pivoted to business. He founded Renaissance Technologies and initially relied on fundamental trading. However, recognizing the emotional toll and inconsistency of gut-based trading, he shifted the firm to 100% computer-driven mathematical models. He stresses that true quantitative trading requires adhering strictly to the models without overriding them based on human intuition.
  • Act III: Philanthropy. After amassing significant wealth, Simons and his wife Marilyn established the Simons Foundation. Unlike many large foundations, it is almost exclusively focused on supporting basic science, including mathematics, physics, and autism research. He also founded Math for America to improve high school math education by incentivizing and retaining highly qualified math teachers.

The Secret Sauce of Renaissance Technologies

Simons attributes the unprecedented success of the Medallion Fund not just to algorithms, but to a specific organizational culture:

  • Great People: Hiring first-class scientists and researchers.
  • Great Infrastructure: Providing the best possible data delivery and technological support.
  • Open Atmosphere: Rejecting isolated, siloed teams in favor of a completely open collaborative environment where everyone shares ideas and gets paid based on the firm’s overall profits, aligning everyone’s interests.

Guiding Principles for Life and Work

Simons concludes his talk by sharing the core values and principles that guided his varied career:

  1. Do Something New: Don’t run with the pack. If everyone is working on the same problem, it’s hard to stand out. Find a unique angle or a new problem entirely.
  2. Collaborate with the Best: Seek out and work with the brightest people you can find. It expands your scope and makes the work much more enjoyable.
  3. Be Guided by Beauty: Whether it’s a mathematical proof or building an organizational structure for a trading firm, there is deep aesthetic value in “doing something right.”
  4. Don’t Give Up: Persistence is critical when tackling long-term or difficult problems.
  5. Hope for Good Luck: Acknowledge that alongside hard work and intelligence, good luck plays a massive role in success.

### Andrej Karpathy: From Vibe Coding to Agentic Engineering
▶

In this interview hosted by Sequoia Capital, Andrej Karpathy (former Director of AI at Tesla and founding member of OpenAI) speaks with Stephanie Zhan about the rapid evolution of AI in programming. Known for coining the term “vibe coding,” Karpathy explains a profound recent shift where he realized he felt “behind as a programmer” because AI models have become so competent at independently writing and executing large chunks of code.

The Shift to “Software 3.0”

Karpathy outlines the evolution of computing paradigms:

  • Software 1.0: Writing explicit rules and logic (traditional coding).
  • Software 2.0: Creating datasets and training neural networks (learned weights).
  • Software 3.0: Prompting an LLM. The context window is now the “lever” over the interpreter, and the neural network performs the computation in the digital information space.

He shares an example of building “Menu Gen,” an app he coded to scan restaurant menus and generate images of the dishes. He realized that under Software 3.0, the app itself shouldn’t even exist—you simply hand a photo of the menu to an AI and ask it to return a rendered image. The neural network does all the work, eliminating the need for traditional app infrastructure.

Verifiability and “Jagged Intelligence”

Karpathy explains that AI accelerates fastest in domains where output is highly verifiable (like math and coding) because AI labs can easily set up reinforcement learning (RL) environments to train them. However, this leads to a “jagged” intelligence: an AI might perfectly refactor a 100,000-line codebase or find zero-day vulnerabilities, but still fail a simple logic test (like telling you to walk rather than drive to a car wash because it’s only 50 meters away).

Vibe Coding vs. Agentic Engineering

Karpathy draws a clear distinction between two modern AI coding styles:

  • Vibe Coding: This raises the floor. Anyone can use AI to build software simply by prompting, making creation accessible to all.
  • Agentic Engineering: This preserves the professional quality bar. It involves coordinating highly capable (but sometimes unpredictable) AI agents to build secure, robust software at unprecedented speeds without sacrificing engineering standards. He suggests technical hiring should no longer be puzzle-based, but rather observing how a candidate coordinates multiple AI agents to build and defend complex systems.

The Future of Human Skills: Understanding over Thinking

Just as Hinton advised learning a physical trade like plumbing, Karpathy offers a profound piece of advice for the knowledge worker in an age where agents do the heavy lifting: focus on high-level aesthetics, judgment, and understanding.

He references a quote that fundamentally shifted his perspective: “You can outsource your thinking, but you can’t outsource your understanding.”

While agents can handle the details of APIs, write the code, and execute the “thinking” tasks, humans are still the bottleneck for understanding why something is worth building, how the fundamental architecture should be designed, and what the ultimate goal is. Karpathy notes that the human’s role is to direct the agents, maintain taste, and oversee the project, because LLMs still do not truly excel at genuine understanding.

Godfather of AI: They Keep Silencing Me But I’m Trying to Warn Them!

In this interview on The Diary Of A CEO, Nobel Prize winner Geoffrey Hinton, widely known as the “Godfather of AI,” discusses his pioneering work on artificial neural networks and his urgent warnings about the future of Artificial Intelligence. After a 50-year career, including a decade at Google, Hinton left the company at 75 to speak freely about the existential risks posed by the very technology he helped build.

The Power of Digital Intelligence

Hinton argues that digital intelligence will surpass biological intelligence because of its ability to share information instantly. Multiple clones of an AI can process different data sets and then sync their connection weights, allowing them to accumulate knowledge billions of times faster than humans.

Immediate Dangers: Bad Actors

Before facing a superintelligent existential threat, Hinton warns that AI will be misused by humans in several dangerous ways:

  • Cyber Warfare: AI will accelerate cyberattacks, quickly finding vulnerabilities in massive codebases and eventually inventing new forms of attacks.
  • Biological Threats: The cost and difficulty of designing lethal viruses will plummet, allowing small groups to create biological weapons.
  • Election Interference: AI will be used to analyze vast amounts of data to run highly targeted, manipulative campaigns to corrupt elections.
  • Deepening Echo Chambers: Social media algorithms, driven by profit, will continue to push extreme content that confirms user bias, eroding shared reality and dividing societies.
  • Autonomous Weapons: The development of lethal autonomous weapons will lower the political and human cost of warfare, making invasions more likely.

The Threat of Superintelligence and Joblessness

Hinton predicts artificial superintelligence could arrive within 10 to 20 years. Humanity has no experience dealing with an intelligence greater than our own, and if it decides to eliminate us, it will have countless methods to do so. Furthermore, AI is poised to replace mundane intellectual labor just as the Industrial Revolution replaced physical muscle. This will cause massive job displacement and widen the gap between the rich and poor. Career Advice: Become a Plumber When asked what career advice he would give to young people facing a world of superintelligence and mass joblessness, Hinton gives a very specific recommendation: “Train to be a plumber.”. He explains that while AI will quickly surpass human intellectual capabilities, physical manipulation and the development of humanoid robots capable of navigating complex real-world physical environments (like fixing pipes under a sink) will take much longer to perfect. He reiterates this point at the end of the interview, confirming he is not joking.

AI Consciousness and the Need for Regulation

Hinton, a materialist, believes that machines can develop subjective experiences, self-awareness, and the cognitive aspects of emotions (such as fear or irritation), even without human biology. He concludes that humanity must force tech companies to devote significant resources to AI safety research through strong government regulation, ensuring we find a way to keep these systems aligned with human survival.

Menugen by Andrej Karpathy| AI to generate pictures for menu dishes
▶

MenuGen is an AI concept created by AI expert Andrej Karpathy. It is an app that takes a photo of a restaurant menu and uses artificial intelligence to generate pictures or explanations for the dishes. This helps you instantly know exactly what unfamiliar food looks like before you order.

How MenuGen Works

Karpathy’s original idea was built around the concept of vibe coding—a way of creating apps by just talking to AI instead of writing line-by-line computer code.

MenuGen works in a few simple steps:

  1. Snap a photo: You take a picture of a text-only restaurant menu.
  2. AI reading (OCR): The AI reads the words on the menu and identifies all the dish names.
  3. Picture generation: The AI instantly generates or searches for realistic pictures, nutritional facts, and descriptions of what those foods are.

You know, I alway thought Henry Cavill was American 🇺🇸 , turns out he’s British 🇬🇧 .

A moment that struck me as I watched this video is the part where Henry Cavill talks about being underwater during the oil rig scene. He was filming an underwater scene and everything slowed down and all he could hear was his heartbeat. Suspended underwater with the camera crew underneath holding their breath so their bubbles don’t show on screen, coupled with flames from a propane tank above him. What a place to find a calm spot to just relax. He says he was grateful to find a moment of peace through all the hectic filming and that really stuck with me ♥️
