Dr. Elsie Kaufmann On Redefining Engineering Education in Ghana
▶

In this talk, Dr. Elsie Effah Kaufmann, a renowned biomedical engineer and academic, discusses the critical challenges within engineering education in Ghana and provides a roadmap for transformation.

Core Challenges Identified: The “Import” Mentality: Dr. Kaufmann notes that Ghanaian society is often risk-averse and prefers importing foreign-made solutions over trusting locally engineered products. Lack of Clear Objectives: Educational institutions and educators often lack a clear definition of what kind of engineer they are intended to produce, leading to a system with little accountability. Flawed Reward Systems: Engineering students are often trained to prioritize rote memorization to earn high grades and secure employment, rather than being encouraged to engage in creative problem-solving or innovation. Parental and Social Pressures: Well-meaning parents often steer their children away from engineering or toward specific paths that guarantee jobs, while the rigid science-based curriculum often excludes those with a passion for engineering but the “wrong” subject combinations.

Potential Solutions and Way Forward: Collaborative Practical Programs: Dr. Kaufmann shares the success of her department’s collaboration with the University of Michigan, which sends students into hospitals to identify real-world problems and design solutions, fostering innovation. Fostering Passion and Confidence: She highlights that Ghanaian students are capable of creating prototypes and patents when given the right space and encouragement to solve real problems. Strategic Policy Changes: National Dialogue: Shifting the focus from merely getting a certificate to learning how to innovate. Evidence-Based Reforms: Implementing programs to track data that can inform better teaching practices and government investment. Broadening Access: Encouraging parents and society to support student passions rather than forcing them into traditional, “safe” career paths.

Jim Carrey on Finding Your Purpose and Letting Go of Fear
▶

This video features actor and artist Jim Carrey delivering an inspiring message about overcoming fear, defining personal purpose, and choosing love over fear in life’s journey.

Key Themes and Takeaways:

Fear vs. Love: Carrey explains that our life choices are driven by either fear or love. He warns against choosing paths based on “fear disguised as practicality.” The Lesson from his Father: He shares the story of his father, an accountant who let go of his dream of being a comedian for a “safe” job, only to be laid off later. This taught Carrey that you can fail at what you don’t love, so you might as well take a chance on your passion. Purpose: Carrey describes his realization that his life’s purpose was to help “free people from concern.” He encourages listeners to identify how their own talents can serve others, noting that the positive effect we have on others is the most valuable currency. Identity and Ego: He reflects on his fame, noting that while he reached the “top of the mountain,” he still had to find peace within himself. He warns against the ego’s trap—the constant need for achievement and the belief that we are never “enough.” Faith and Living Fully: Carrey advocates for living in the present moment, practicing a “reset button” on negative thinking, and choosing faith over fear. He urges the audience to follow their “playful heart.”

Lessons from 1,000 Days on the Road funny yet interesting TED talk

In this inspiring talk, former stockbroker Tomislav Perko shares his journey of traveling the world with almost no money following the 2008 financial crisis. He explains that travel is accessible to everyone if you prioritize experiences over traditional luxury, and he outlines several practical strategies to minimize costs:

Key Travel Strategies: Transportation: Perko relies on hitchhiking, which he notes is free and creates unique adventures. Other alternatives include walking, cycling, or working in exchange for transportation on boats. Accommodation: He frequently uses Couchsurfing to stay with locals, providing a more authentic experience than hotels. Additional options include camping in city parks or volunteering in exchange for room and board. Food and Expenses: To save money, he suggests buying groceries in supermarkets or even dumpster diving for discarded food. He emphasizes avoiding expensive bars and restaurants.

Earning Money on the Road: While traveling, Perko occasionally earned money through busking or by taking short-term manual labor jobs, such as his experience as a traffic diverter in Australia, which allowed him to fund months of travel with just two weeks of work.

Core Life Lessons: Overcoming Prejudice: Perko highlights his realization that the world is often less dangerous than media or societal fears suggest. He shares anecdotes about how people in different countries often share similar, often unfounded, warnings about their neighbors. The Return Home: He discusses the challenge of reintegrating into normal life, offering three options: returning to the old lifestyle, becoming a perpetual traveler, or finding a balance by maintaining the “intensity” of travel while living in one place.

Ultimately, Perko encourages viewers to act on their gut feelings and move past the fear of being “broke” to pursue their dreams, concluding with the sentiment that in 20 years, we are more likely to regret the things we didn’t do than the things we did.

"Run Go" by Stonebwoy with Lyrics about the Simple life
▶

The Desire for a Simple Life: Throughout the song, particularly around the 30-second mark and again near the 1-minute 30-second mark, Stonebwoy expresses that people simply want a dignified existence. This is defined by basic human needs: food, clothing, love, and shelter. Critique of Social Injustice: The lyrics address systemic exploitation, such as the commodification of natural resources like oxygen, mentioned around the 20-second and 2-minute 40-second marks. He questions how people are expected to survive when basic necessities are turned into burdens. Call for Accountability: Moving into the 2nd minute, the song highlights the selfishness of those who prioritize their own wealth at the expense of others, labeling such actions as predatory and unprincipled.

The message concludes by reinforcing that everyone deserves stability and peace, emphasizing that the hardships described are what ultimately force people to consider leaving their motherland.

Best scenes in animation. Fun Fact the studio learnt animation whiles creating this movie.

[LYRICS] 37 years ago a witch done put a spell on me A spell where when Im talkin’ I’m singin’ it with glee When you’re always singin’ you got to live alone That’s why I made this mountain shack my home And when you’re on the mountain, you got no guarantees That life will turn up roses or turn out as you please When you’re on the mountain, there’s lots to be a’feared That’s why this here old mountain goat’s prepared! Be prepared, be prepared This lesson must be shared This lesson must be shared, be prepared Be prepared, be prepared

And unless you got a spare You got one life so handle it with care got horns that open bottles And got horns that hold my keys got horns that when you turn ‘em right They help me watch TV got horns that open pickle jars And horns that come with hair got horns that hang my other horns always come prepared Be prepared, be prepared This lesson must be shared This lesson must be shared, be prepared Be prepared, be prepared And unless you got a spare You got one life so handle it with care Yeehee, keep your hands and feet Inside of the vehicle at all times Ooh, an avalanche is comin’ and I do not feel prepared

It’s rumblin’ like a mountain lion,

I must say that I’m scared

Red Bull of course: Flying a Plane Through Tunnels
▶

Watch the video here:

When it comes to extreme sports and pushing the absolute boundaries of human capability, Red Bull is a name that instantly comes to mind. But even by their staggering standards, Dario Costa’s attempt to fly an airplane through not one, but two enclosed highway tunnels is an achievement that defies belief.

A World First Achievement

The video chronicles a world-first aviation stunt that looks like it was pulled straight out of an action movie or a video game. Italian stunt pilot Dario Costa took on the unprecedented challenge of navigating a specially modified race plane through the dual Çatalca Tunnels on the Northern Marmara Highway in Istanbul, Turkey.

What makes this stunt so incredibly dangerous is the margin for error. The wingspan of the plane leaves only a few meters of clearance on either side of the curved concrete walls. One slight miscalculation, a sudden gust of wind, or a momentary lapse in concentration would mean instant disaster. Costa himself notes the terrifying physics of the tunnel, explaining how the enclosed space creates airwaves that force him to react in less than 250 milliseconds.

The Mental and Physical Toll

Beyond the technical flying skills required, the video brilliantly highlights the immense psychological pressure of the stunt. We see Costa in the cockpit before the flight, deeply focused and visibly anxious. He admits to being “100 percent scared,” acknowledging that once he is inside the tunnel, there are no backup options and no room to eject. The fear he feels is the exact fuel he needs to push himself to total concentration.

The flight itself is a breathtaking spectacle. Costa takes off inside the first tunnel, shoots out into a brief open air gap, and immediately dives into the second, longer tunnel. The roar of the engine echoing off the concrete, combined with the blur of the tunnel lights, makes for a heart pounding viewing experience.

A Triumphant Conclusion

When Costa finally emerges from the second tunnel into the open sky, pulling the plane up into a celebratory loop, the relief and joy are palpable. His emotional reaction in the cockpit, screaming in triumph, is a powerful reminder of the human spirit’s drive to achieve the impossible. It is a stunning display of precision, courage, and masterful aviation that will be remembered for years to come.
