MTN Ghana cuts fibre prices by up to 70%: 100 Mbps Now GH¢299 a Month
Ghanaians complaining about expensive home broadband got substantial relief when MTN Ghana announced a major reduction in home fibre prices, with the revised tariffs taking effect on Wednesday, June 17, 2026. The price of the 100 Mbps unlimited monthly fibre package dropped from GH¢987 to GH¢299, representing a 70 percent reduction. MTN also expanded its high-speed offerings by introducing a 300 Mbps package at GH¢444 per month and a 500 Mbps tier at GH¢999 per month.

Government engagement and market context
The price cuts followed negotiations between state regulators and telecom executives. Reacting to the announcement, the Minister of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, posted on social media detailing the context behind the tariff changes.
You demanded. We engaged. @MTNGhana has responded.

Effective today, fibre broadband prices have crashed!
Previously, for a month of unlimited 100 Mbps broadband, you paid GHS 987. Today, for the same 100 Mbps, you pay GHS 299.

According to the Minister, the price reductions came after direct discussions between the Ministry and MTN Ghana regarding consumer complaints over the high cost of fixed broadband relative to average household income in Ghana.
MTN Ghana held approximately 41 percent of the national residential fibre market in the first quarter of 2026, according to data from the National Communications Authority (NCA). Despite leading in coverage and subscriber numbers, MTN had remained the most expensive provider on the market. Competitors like Telecel Broadband had already introduced lower-cost entry packages, including a GH¢129 monthly plan launched in April 2026. MTN’s GH¢987 entry tier for 100 Mbps had created a steep barrier for residential users seeking high-speed internet.
| Package | Speed | Previous Price | New Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Entry Tier | 100 Mbps | GH¢987 | GH¢299 |
| Mid Tier | 300 Mbps | New Plan | GH¢444 |
| High Tier | 500 Mbps | New Plan | GH¢999 |
Competition with satellite providers
The price reduction also positions MTN more competitively against satellite operators like Starlink. Starlink’s Standard residential plan in Ghana costs GH¢770 per month for unlimited data, alongside upfront hardware costs.
For residents in urban centers and suburban neighborhoods with existing fibre infrastructure, MTN’s revised rates offer significantly lower monthly costs and lower latency compared to satellite connections. Starlink remains relevant primarily for rural locations, peri-urban zones without fibre rollout, or enterprise fallback connections.
Expected impact on residential users
The lower pricing lowers the cost of internet access for home offices, remote software developers, content creators, and small businesses operating from residential locations.
The real test of the new tariffs will depend on service delivery factors beyond the sticker price. Key factors to watch include sustained throughput during peak hours, peak-time congestion management, fair usage policy (FUP) thresholds on “unlimited” tiers, and responsiveness of technical support teams for fiber cut repairs.
