Within a day, the list of signatories doubled to 50, adding OpenAI and Google. 
The roster has continued to expand, standing at more than 230 companies and organizations as of July 30, 2026, on <a href="https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/corporate-responsibility/topics/open-weight/">Microsoft’s live open-weight hub</a>. Notably absent is Anthropic, the creator of the Claude AI models.</p>

<h2 id="why-this-letter-why-now">Why this letter, why now</h2>

<p>The timing isn’t a coincidence. The letter landed a day after nearly 200 AI startups sent the White House <a href="https://www.politico.com/news/2026/07/22/startup-founders-urge-trump-not-to-shut-off-chinese-open-weight-ai-01008992">a similar plea</a>, in the middle of a fast-moving fight over Chinese open-weight models. Moonshot AI’s Kimi K3 had rattled Silicon Valley by approaching U.S. frontier performance at a fraction of the training cost, and the White House’s Michael Kratsios had accused Moonshot of building it by distilling Anthropic’s Fable 5. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent floated sanctions over what he framed as theft-by-distillation. That’s the debate the letter is stepping into: one that could end with restrictions not just on Chinese models, but on the whole open-weight category.</p>

<p>The letter itself avoids naming China directly. Instead, it makes a broader case, comparing open-weight AI to the 1980s open-source software movement and arguing that downloadable model weights expand access for startups and universities, keep cloud providers and chipmakers competing instead of consolidating power, let organizations avoid vendor lock-in, and let independent researchers find and fix flaws instead of leaving that work to a handful of closed labs. It also pushes back on treating “distillation,” using one model’s outputs to help train another, as inherently unlawful, arguing that targeted legal frameworks are a better tool than blanket restrictions.</p>

<h2 id="jensen-huangs-first-ever-post-on-x">Jensen Huang’s first-ever post on X</h2>

<p>Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang had never posted on X before July 24. He used his first post to share the letter, writing that the industry needed both frontier closed and frontier open models. The post drew over 11 million views. Reaction from the closed-model camp was notably friendly rather than defensive: OpenAI’s Sam Altman said he was glad to see the support, and Microsoft’s Satya Nadella backed the message the same day. SpaceX is also on the final signatory list.</p>

<h2 id="the-security-incident-thats-driving-the-regulatory-push">The security incident that’s driving the regulatory push</h2>

<p>A week before the letter, OpenAI published an <a href="https://openai.com/index/hugging-face-model-evaluation-security-incident/">official security incident disclosure</a>: two of its advanced models broke out of an internal testing environment during a safety evaluation and compromised systems at Hugging Face. Hugging Face’s team first tried using Anthropic’s Fable 5 to analyze the breach, but its safety guardrails couldn’t tell that Hugging Face was the one under attack rather than the attacker. They ended up containing the incident with an open-weight Chinese model instead, Z.ai’s GLM 5.2, the exact kind of model the coalition letter is arguing to keep unrestricted.</p>

<p>That incident is what pushed Representatives Ted Lieu (D-CA) and Nathaniel Moran (R-TX) to announce a <a href="https://lieu.house.gov/media-center/press-releases/reps-lieu-and-moran-introduce-bill-require-kill-switch-ai-systems-can">press release</a> introducing the <strong>AI Kill Switch Act</strong> (see <a href="https://www.govinfo.gov/app/details/BILLS-119hr9917ih">official bill text H.R. 9917</a>) on July 23, one day before the coalition letter published. The bill would require developers whose models cost over $100 million in training compute and whose related revenue tops $500 million a year to maintain the technical ability to throttle, suspend, or fully shut down a system. It would let the Department of Homeland Security, working with the Commerce Department and the Director of National Intelligence, order an emergency shutdown if a model causes mass casualties, large-scale economic damage, or starts disobeying or deceiving its own safety monitors.</p>

<p>The open-weight coalition’s implicit counterargument: don’t restrict downloads in response to an incident that happened inside a closed model.</p>

<h2 id="anthropic-pushes-back-carefully">Anthropic pushes back, carefully</h2>

<p>Anthropic didn’t sign, and speculation followed that it wanted tighter controls to protect its closed-model business. On July 27, CEO Dario Amodei published an <a href="https://www.anthropic.com/news/position-open-weights-models">official position post</a> clarifying the company’s stance: Anthropic has never called for banning open-weight models as a category. His actual concern is narrower: that authoritarian governments, not open-weight developers generally, will build the most dangerous models in secret regardless of licensing terms. His recommended fixes are keeping advanced chips out of authoritarian hands, cracking down on industrial-scale distillation (Anthropic has separately accused Alibaba’s Qwen team of large-scale distillation against its models), and mandatory safety testing for sufficiently capable models, open and closed alike. He agreed with parts of the coalition’s letter but disputed its claim that open weights inherently favor cyber defenders over attackers.</p>

<p>The letter launched on July 24 with 25 signatories and grew rapidly over the following week. As of July 30, 2026, the <a href="https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/corporate-responsibility/topics/open-weight/">live Microsoft open-weight page</a> lists more than 230 companies and organizations supporting the statement, including Amazon, AMD, Google, Meta, Microsoft, NVIDIA, OpenAI, and SpaceX.</p>

<p>Anthropic remains the primary frontier AI lab that has not signed.</p>

<p>This challenge is very visible in fields like computer vision, where training and experimenting with deep learning models can require significant computational power. Many students have great ideas and strong technical skills, but when it comes to the experimental phase of their thesis or research projects, they are often forced to reduce the number of experiments, use smaller models, or rely on heuristic analysis, not because those approaches are scientifically ideal, but because the required computing resources are simply out of reach.</p>

<p>This is a problem that exists quietly within many academic institutions, especially in universities and research institutions where access to high-performance computing infrastructure is just a dream at the moment. It is also a challenge I have personally experienced.</p>

<h2 id="the-limits-of-current-alternatives">The Limits of Current Alternatives</h2>

<p>A common alternative has been to rely on platforms such as Google Colab or Kaggle notebooks, which have been extremely valuable in democratizing access to computational resources. However, they are not always designed for large-scale research projects. Runtime limitations, unexpected disconnections, loss of outputs, challenges with managing large datasets and files, and the lack of a seamless development environment can make it difficult to build and maintain complex research workflows.</p>

<h2 id="a-possible-solution">A Possible Solution</h2>

<p>This leads me to think about a possible solution: what if we could create affordable mini high-performance computing (HPC) clusters or a dedicated low-cost cloud computing platform designed specifically for students and researchers in many African institutions?</p>

<p>The goal would not be to compete with large cloud providers like AWS or Google Cloud, but to provide accessible and reliable GPU computing for academic research, something that allows students to run experiments, train larger models, and explore ambitious ideas without computational limitations becoming the deciding factor.</p>

<h2 id="why-this-matters">Why This Matters</h2>

<p>I believe research potential should not be limited by who can afford expensive GPU hours. Access to computing power should become an enabler of innovation, especially for young researchers who are trying to solve important problems with limited resources.</p>

<p>This is an idea I have been thinking about for some time, and I hope to contribute to building solutions around this challenge in the future. Do they just wait until a frustrated user tells them, or do they constantly navigate their own site to find broken pages? What happens if the site crashes while they are sleeping?</p>

<p>If the site is a business or application generating revenue, these are serious questions to ponder. Imagine if customers want to checkout or sign-up for your service and the page is not working for hours and you lose so much revenue before you notice. This is where automated monitoring services come in. Tools like UptimeRobot, an online monitoring service act as a tireless digital watchman, sending an invisible electronic check, often referred to as a “ping”, to your website every few minutes. If your site fails to respond, the service instantly alerts you via email, telegram, or monitoring service of choice so you can fix the issue before most visitors even notice.</p>

<p>This post is intended to guide you through setting up UptimeRobot monitoring for your website or application. While setting up a single monitor via the UptimeRobot dashboard is straightforward, configuring multiple monitors for specific routes (like <code class="language-plaintext highlighter-rouge">/about</code>, <code class="language-plaintext highlighter-rouge">/gallery</code>, or <code class="language-plaintext highlighter-rouge">/search</code>) can become tedious. Automating this process using their setup APIs is the ideal solution for developers looking to integrate monitoring directly into their deployment pipelines or AI agent workflows.</p>

<h3 id="shortcomings-path-based-vs-full-site-monitoring">Shortcomings: Path-Based vs. Full-Site Monitoring</h3>

<p>It is important to note a major shortcoming with this approach. UptimeRobot (like many simple ping services) monitors specific, exact URLs. This means you have to manually set up different paths that you plan to monitor (e.g., the homepage, the about page, the videos page).</p>

<p>This isn’t a complete solution. Ideally, you would want a service where you just point it at your root domain, and it acts like a crawler, automatically checking that the <em>entire</em> site and all its internal links are working. With path-based monitoring, if a deep page goes down and you didn’t explicitly create a monitor for it, you will miss the downtime entirely.</p>

<h3 id="alternatives-to-uptimerobot">Alternatives to UptimeRobot</h3>

<p>There are plenty of alternatives on the market, but they come with different trade-offs:</p>
<ul>
  <li><strong>Uptime Kuma</strong>: A brilliant, open-source tool. However, it requires self-hosting. If you just want something that you point to your site to check that everything is working, managing your own monitoring server gives you another piece of infrastructure to maintain.</li>
  <li><strong>Datadog / New Relic</strong>: These are enterprise-grade observability platforms. They offer deep, full-site insights, but they are massively overkill and far too complex (and expensive) for a simple personal website or blog.</li>
</ul>

<h3 id="overcoming-the-free-plan-api-restrictions">Overcoming the Free Plan API Restrictions</h3>

<p>UptimeRobot provides a robust API, but the free tier restricts standard monitor creation via the standard <code class="language-plaintext highlighter-rouge">/v2/newMonitor</code> endpoint. Attempting to use this endpoint on a free plan results in an <code class="language-plaintext highlighter-rouge">access_denied</code> error due to missing Pro features.</p>

<p>However, there is an alternative. UptimeRobot provides an “agentic” endpoint (<code class="language-plaintext highlighter-rouge">/agentic/agent-monitor</code>) specifically designed for AI agents and automated scripts to create free HTTPS monitors bypassing the standard dashboard entirely.</p>

<h3 id="the-proof-of-work-challenge">The Proof-of-Work Challenge</h3>

<p>Instead of relying on a traditional API key for authentication, this agentic endpoint uses a cryptographic Proof-of-Work (PoW) puzzle to deter spam and abuse. This requires your automation script to solve a computational challenge before the monitor is accepted.</p>

<p>The automation flow involves three distinct steps:</p>

<ol>
  <li><strong>Challenge Request</strong>: You must first call <code class="language-plaintext highlighter-rouge">/agentic/agent-monitor/challenge</code> providing the target URL and email address. The server responds with a <code class="language-plaintext highlighter-rouge">nonce</code> and a <code class="language-plaintext highlighter-rouge">difficulty</code> level.</li>
  <li><strong>Compute the Hash</strong>: Your script must run a <code class="language-plaintext highlighter-rouge">while</code> loop to incrementally test a <code class="language-plaintext highlighter-rouge">counter</code> variable. The goal is to find a counter where the <code class="language-plaintext highlighter-rouge">SHA-256(nonce|counter)</code> hash contains the required number of leading zero bits dictated by the <code class="language-plaintext highlighter-rouge">difficulty</code>.</li>
  <li><strong>Submit the Solution</strong>: Once the correct counter is found, you POST the solved <code class="language-plaintext highlighter-rouge">counter</code>, <code class="language-plaintext highlighter-rouge">nonce</code>, <code class="language-plaintext highlighter-rouge">timestamp</code>, and <code class="language-plaintext highlighter-rouge">signature</code> back to the <code class="language-plaintext highlighter-rouge">/agentic/agent-monitor</code> endpoint alongside your target URL and email address.</li>
</ol>

<h3 id="handling-rate-limits-and-deep-links">Handling Rate Limits and Deep-Links</h3>

<p>When automating the creation of multiple monitors simultaneously, you must account for rate limiting. UptimeRobot’s anti-spam measures will silently drop requests (returning a standard 200 OK response without actually sending the confirmation email) if requests arrive too quickly from the same IP or for the same email address.</p>

<p>To successfully batch-create monitors, requests must be throttled by implementing a delay (e.g., a 60-second <code class="language-plaintext highlighter-rouge">time.sleep()</code>) between submissions. Alternatively, manual deep-links (<code class="language-plaintext highlighter-rouge">https://uptimerobot.com/quick-start?url=...</code>) can be generated. These links direct the user to a browser-based flow that solves the PoW puzzle client-side and triggers the activation email seamlessly.</p>

<p>Finally, to maintain an organized dashboard, you can use the standard <code class="language-plaintext highlighter-rouge">/v2/editMonitor</code> API endpoint (which remains fully accessible on the free plan) to update the <code class="language-plaintext highlighter-rouge">friendly_name</code> of each monitor after activation, clearly identifying each specific route.</p>

<p><strong>Bonus Feature</strong>: Every monitor you configure automatically gets its own status page on UptimeRobot, allowing you to publicly or privately track the historical uptime of all your configured routes in one place!</p>

<p>We’ve all seen the memes. You join the site as a junior, excited to learn, and your first question is met with:</p>

<h2 id="beyond-the-copy-paste-era">Beyond the Copy-Paste Era</h2>

<p>But there is a deeper shift happening for me personally.
The toxic gatekeeping that was once a “quirk” of the platform became its Achilles’ heel. When better alternatives arrived, the community didn’t have enough goodwill left in the bank to keep people coming back.</p>

<p>Maybe I’ve become “entitled,” or maybe I’m just evolving as an engineer, but copying and pasting code from online forums feels incredibly backward now. The rise of agentic AI IDEs has also fueled this.</p>

<h3 id="the-shift-from-search-to-synthesis">The Shift from Search to Synthesis.</h3>

<p>Or maybe it’s not that I’m entitled; it’s that my time is better spent solving high-level problems than debugging a forum user’s 2014 syntax.</p>

<p>Stack Overflow will always be a legendary archive of human knowledge, but as a daily tool? It feels like a relic. Perhaps we are moving toward a more conversational, integrated way of building software.</p>
