Football loves a good full-circle story, and Newcastle United delivered one of the best on March 4, 2026.

In a dramatic Premier League clash at St. James’ Park, 10-man Newcastle United came from behind (after going down to 10 men in the first half) to beat Manchester United 2-1 with a stunning 90th-minute winner from substitute striker William Osula.

The real magic, though, came hours later when Newcastle’s official X account dropped pure gold.

The Legendary Banter Tweet

@NUFC quoted Manchester United’s own post from November 8, 2014:

Congratulations to 11-year-old William Osula from Denmark, winner of today’s MU Soccer Schools World Skills Final.

(Attached was a classic photo of young Osula in a Man Utd kit, beaming with his award at Old Trafford.)

Then came the caption:

Time flies 😅

Paired with two side-by-side images. Embedded tweet below:

  • Top: 23-year-old Osula wheeling away in wild celebration after curling home the decisive goal against the very club that once celebrated him.
  • Bottom: 11-year-old Osula proudly holding his trophy in 2014.

The post exploded. Over 52,000 likes, 1.7+ million views, thousands of replies filled with laughing emojis and rival fans piling on.

The Goal That Started It All

With the score level at 1-1 late on (Anthony Gordon had scored a first-half penalty for Newcastle; Casemiro equalized for United), Osula received a long ball from Kieran Trippier near the right touchline.

He kept it alive with brilliant footwork to prevent it going out, drove inside past his marker, and unleashed an unstoppable curling strike into the top corner from the edge of the box. St. James’ Park erupted.

Newcastle’s official account posted the moment soon after:

Watch the full brilliant sequence: the skill to retain possession, the drive, and that rocket finish.

From Academy Promise to Cult Hero

Osula, who moved from Man Utd’s youth setup to Sheffield United before joining Newcastle in 2024 for around £10-15m, has quickly become a fan favorite on Tyneside. Eddie Howe revealed post-match that Osula had stayed late after training the previous day specifically practicing that type of curling finish, and nailed most of them. Written in the stars.

The win ended Man Utd’s unbeaten run under interim boss Michael Carrick and gave Newcastle a massive boost in a tough season.

Osula summed it up perfectly afterward: the “best feeling ever.”

Moments like this remind us why we love football. Twists of fate, poetic justice, and a bit of delicious rivalry banter.
